Let’s consider the Milky Way
through the void, eons away.
Some of its planets are now extinct;
some may have denizens who think.
Do they sense us on Earth?
Do they collapse in mirth?
Now let’s see what our senses teach
when we walk the beckoning beach.
A horseshoe crab scrapes across the sand,
a primordial fossil from an earlier land.
Piled around are plastic shards,
detritus from suburban yards.
What have we lost in living?
Wait! My cell phone is ringing!
Here we are like digital crabs
to be analyzed in future labs.
